America’s Greatest Sin – Legalized murder through abortion



Proverbs 14:34 says:

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”


The United States of America was founded on the principles of liberty and justice for all.  In our founding document in the Declaration of Independence, there are several references to God including this statement - “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness.” 


However, as we know, America has not always lived up to the true meaning of its creed.  And it is certainly not doing so do today in the area of abortion.  In “The land of the free and the home of the brave,” we are ignoring our Declaration Principals and the "Right to life" of all men and are unashamedly averaging 1.2 million abortions per year.  If you do the math, that is 3,287 abortions a day.  Our great nation is legally murdering an average of 3,287 unborn babies a day.  These legalized murders are going unpunished by our once Christian nation, therefore God will have to avenge and bring justice for this sin unless we nationally repent and outlaw abortion.  How long will the full fury of God’s wrath be held back against this nation who once knew and honored God?


We are already under God’s judgment as a nation.  Romans 1:18-32 paints the perfect picture of the America who once knew and honored God, and who has rejected God.  For the past generation we have rejected God in our homes, schools and universities, and have replaced Him with the god of secular humanism.  In turn, God has given us over to uncleanness and sexual perversion (vs.24), and to homosexuality (vs. 27).  Because we have refused to retain God in our knowledge (vs. 28), (as every public school and university, including the one’s in the northeast that were originally founded as Christian universities, are now teaching the awful lie of evolution), He has given us over to a reprobate mind and unrighteousness, pornography, fornication, wickedness, violence, murder, corrupt entertainment, and covetousness has filled our land.  This message will center on America’s greatest national sin, however, which is the dismemberment and murder of millions of its unborn through legal abortion.


In this article we will explore the issue of abortion in America.  We will first look at what the Scripture says about life and murder.  We will then discuss the American political landscape before the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, and see what changes this decision brought about.  We will briefly discuss the “cash” industry of abortion and quote doctors who left their barbarous trade.  Finally we will discuss the current political scene and encourage all moral God loving Americans to pray and get involved in helping to end this terrible scourge on our nation.                



Scriptures against abortion


There are no Scriptures that specifically deal with abortion.  However, in Proverbs 6:16-19, it lists the seven “things” that God hates, and among these are “hands that shed innocent blood.”  There is no blood more innocent than that of the unborn child.  There is also a Scripture in Exodus 21 dealing with men fighting and hurting a woman that is pregnant.  Under the Levitical Law, if the child was harmed, the man was to pay with his life. 


Modern science has now proven what the Scriptures have taught for thousands of years - that the precious miracle of life begins at the moment of conception.  Both Jeremiah 1:5 and Isaiah 44:24 mention that God forms the child in the womb.  The psalmist in 139:13-14 mentions that he was covered in his mother’s womb and was fearfully and wonderfully made.  God formed and fearfully and wonderfully made us inside of the womb from the moment of conception.


As recorded in Psalms 106:37-38, and 2Kings 17:7, the Israelites at times sacrificed their infants and children to the pagan gods that they were serving.  So also, in the once God fearing and Christian America, we have sacrificed our unborn babies to the altar of abortion.  As of this writing in 2005, since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, we have murdered over 44 million unborn babies.



Where is the outrage?


Just think about that for a moment.  In all of the wars that we have fought as a nation, there have only been about 1.5 million deaths. The Bush-haters get upset over one or two deaths a day in Iraq, even though we were losing 1000 men a day at times in Europe during WWII.  But, where is all the public outrage over abortion?  People get upset when they hear from the news of one or two deaths by murder or by an accident.  Even though these are horrible things, it does not even remotely compare to 3,287 abortions a day.  People get upset and there is a media frenzy over 1 “possible” case of mad-cow disease.  Where is the public outrage over 44 million abortions?



Before Roe v. Wade


Before the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case, there were heavy restrictions on abortion in 46 states.  Abortion was only allowed in rare cases, such as the life of the mother.  Many of these states had laws against abortion that extended back into the 1800’s.


Then in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, a small group of activists began a campaign to legalize abortion.  David Kupelian, in his article, “How lying marketers sold Roe v. Wade to America,” states the following:


“In one of the most successful marketing campaigns in modern political history, the ‘abortion rights movement’ – with all of its emotionally compelling catch-phrases and powerful political slogans – has succeeded in turning what once was a heinous crime into a fiercely defended constitutional right.”


They used catchy slogans like, “Women must have control over their own bodies,” “Freedom of choice – a basic American right,” and “Who decides? You decide!” 

Kupelian quotes the co-founder of NARAL - originally, the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, and later renamed the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League - "I remember laughing when we made those slogans up,” recalls Bernard Nathanson, M.D., co-founder of pro-abortion vanguard group NARAL, reminiscing about the early days of the abortion-rights movement in the late '60s and early '70s. “We were looking for some sexy, catchy slogans to capture public opinion. They were very cynical slogans then, just as all of these slogans today are very, very cynical."

Kupelian’s article continues with Dr. Nathanson’s confession:

"We persuaded the media that the cause of permissive abortion was a liberal, enlightened, sophisticated one," recalls the movement's co-founder. "Knowing that if a true poll were taken, we would be soundly defeated, we simply fabricated the results of fictional polls. We announced to the media that we had taken polls and that 60 percent of Americans were in favor of permissive abortion. This is the tactic of the self-fulfilling lie. Few people care to be in the minority. We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. The actual figure was approaching 100,000, but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1 million.

"Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200-250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000. These false figures took root in the consciousness of Americans, convincing many that we needed to crack the abortion law.

"Another myth we fed to the public through the media was that legalizing abortion would only mean that the abortions taking place illegally would then be done legally. In fact, of course, abortion is now being used as a primary method of birth control in the U.S. and the annual number of abortions has increased by 1,500 percent since legalization."

“NARAL's brilliantly deceitful marketing campaign, bolstered by fraudulent ‘research,’ was uncannily successful. In New York, the law outlawing abortion had been on the books for 140 years. "In two years of work, we at NARAL struck that law down,” says Nathanson. “We lobbied the legislature, we captured the media, we spent money on public relations ... Our first year's budget was $7,500. Of that, $5,000 was allotted to a public relations firm to persuade the media of the correctness of our position. That was in 1969.

“New York immediately became the abortion capital for the eastern half of the United States.

"We were inundated with applicants for abortion,” says Nathanson. “To that end, I set up a clinic, the Center for Reproductive And Sexual Health (C.R.A.S.H.), which operated in the east side of Manhattan. It had 10 operating rooms, 35 doctors, 85 nurses. It operated seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to midnight. We did 120 abortions every day in that clinic. At the end of the two years that I was the director, we had done 60,000 abortions. I myself, with my own hands, have done 5,000 abortions. I have supervised another 10,000 that residents have done under my direction. So I have 75,000 abortions in my life. Those are pretty good credentials to speak on the subject of abortion."


What did Roe v. Wade accomplish?

Firstly, let us briefly mention “Jane Roe,” the woman behind Roe v. Wade.  Her real name is Norma McCorvey.  She was a resident of Texas where abortion was illegal except for the life of the mother.  She became pregnant and sued the state of Texas in 1971 so that she could have an abortion.  She claimed to have gotten pregnant from a rape, which she later recanted.  Because of the length of the court case, she had the baby and gave it up for adoption.  Norma McCorvey is now a strong pro-life advocate.  In 2003 McCorvey filed suit to have Roe v. Wade overturned.  The suit contains 5,437 pages of evidence and affidavits from more than 1,000 women who testified that having an abortion had devastating emotional, physical, and psychological effects on them.

The Supreme Court in January of 1973, voted in favor of “Jane Roe.”  This made abortion legal in all 50 states.  They used the bogus argument of the “right to privacy” in their decision.  A woman now had the “right” to consult a willing physician to take the life of her baby.  They divided their decision into the three trimesters of pregnancy.  In the first two trimesters, there was abortion-on-demand.  Individual states could make laws on how they dealt with abortions in the third-trimester.  Most states have restrictions on abortions in the last trimester, however it could be performed if the “heath” of the mother is deemed to be in jeopardy.  The problem with this is that the heath of the mother is vague and broad.  “Heath” can include all medical, psychological, social, familial, and economic factors.

In essence, the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision usurped the laws of the states and made abortion-on-demand throughout the pregnancy legal throughout the nation.

Judicial tyranny is another subject, and it is a major problem in America.  Congress needs to put the federal judges back in their place.  In our system of checks and balances, the legislative branch (our representatives in Congress), and the executive branch (President and his cabinet), has the combined authority over the judicial branch.  Federal judges are supposed to just interpret the law, and not legislate from the bench. 

Great men of the past understood this.  Andrew Jackson ignored a court order by the chief justice of the Supreme Court and said, "The opinion of the judges has no more authority over the Congress than the opinion of Congress has over the judges, and on that point the President is independent of both.  The authority of the Supreme Court must not, therefore, be permitted to control the Congress or the Executive."      

Abraham Lincoln also ignored the 1858 Supreme Court Dread-Scott decision that ruled that even the free blacks “have no rights as citizens.”  He and the Republican congress worked to end slavery and passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and nearly two-dozen civil rights bills.


The abortion industry

The abortion industry is a cash business.  Hear the startling confessions of former abortionist doctors, Dr. Anthony Levantino, and Dr. Whitten:

"Why do doctors do abortions?” asks Anthony Levantino, M.D., an OBGYN who provided abortions for his patients in his Albany, N.Y., office for eight years. “Why did I do abortions? If you are pro-choice, or, as a lot of people like to say, 'morally neutral' on the subject, and you happen to be a gynecologist, then it's up to you to take the instruments in hand and actively perform abortions. It's part of your training. I've heard it many times from other obstetricians: Well, I'm not really pro-abortion, I'm pro-woman.'

"The women's groups in this country have done a very good job of selling that bill of goods to the population, that somehow destroying a life is being pro-women. I can tell you a lot of obstetricians believe it. I used to.

"Along the way,” says Levantino, “you find out that you can make a lot of money doing abortions. I worked 9 to 5. I was never bothered at night. I never had to go out on weekends. And I made more money than my obstetrician brethren. And I didn't have to face the liability. That's a big factor, a huge perk. I almost never, ever had to worry about her lawyer bothering me.

"In my practice, we were averaging between $250 and $500 per abortion – and it was cash. It's the one time as a doctor you can say, 'Either pay me up front or I'm not going to take care of you.' Abortion is totally elective. Either you have the money or you don't. And they get it.

"I've seen doctors walk out after three hours' work and split $4,500 dollars between them on a Saturday morning – more if you go longer into the day,’ she said. ‘Of the four clinics I've worked in, none of them ever showed that they collected the doctors' money; they collect it separately, and do not show it on any of the records in those clinics. That way, the doctors are independent contractors and the clinic doesn't have to be concerned with their malpractice insurance, and doesn't have to report their income to the IRS."

"Every single transaction that we did," adds Whitten, "was cash money. We wouldn't take a check, or even a credit card. If you didn't have the money, forget it. It wasn't unusual at all for me to take $10,000 to $15,000 a day to the bank – in cash."


Read this chilling confession of a former abortionists, Dr. Brewer, from an excerpt from the article:

Physicians are manipulated into going against their own consciences and performing abortions, says Brewer, all in the name of helping women. He describes witnessing a suction abortion for the first time, during his medical training:

“I can remember ... the resident doctor sitting down, putting the tube in, and removing the contents. I saw the bloody material coming down the plastic tube, and it went into a big jar. My job afterwards was to go and undo the jar, and to see what was inside.

“I didn't have any views on abortion; I was in a training program, and this was a brand new experience. I was going to get to see a new procedure and learn. I opened the jar and took the little piece of stockingette stocking and opened that little bag. The resident doctor said, "Now put it on that blue towel and check it out. We want to make sure that we got it all." I thought, "That'll be exciting – hands-on experience looking at tissue." I opened the sock up and put it on the towel, and there were parts of a person in there.

“I had taken anatomy, I was a medical student. I knew what I was looking at. There was a little scapula and an arm, I saw some ribs and a chest, and a little tiny head. I saw a piece of a leg, and a tiny hand and an arm and, you know, it was like somebody put a hot poker into me. I had a conscience, and it hurt. Well, I checked it out and there were two arms and two legs and one head and so forth, and I turned and said, "I guess you got it all." That was a very hard experience for me to go through emotionally.

“Here I was with no real convictions, caught in the middle. And so I did what a lot of us do throughout our life. We don't do anything. I didn't talk with anybody about it, I didn't talk with my folks about it, I didn't think about it. I did nothing. And do you know what happened? I got to see another abortion. That one hurt too. But again I didn't do anything, and so I kept seeing abortions. Do you know what? It hurt a little bit less every time I saw one.

“Then I got to sit down and do an abortion. Well, the first one that I did was kind of hard. It hurt me again like a hot poker. But after a while, it got to where it didn't hurt. My heart got calloused. I was like a lot of people are today – afraid to stand up. I was afraid to speak up. Or some of us, maybe we aren't afraid, but we just don't have our own convictions settled yet.

One particular abortion changed Brewer's life. "I remember an experience as a resident on a hysterotomy (a late-term abortion delivered by caesarean section). I remember seeing the baby move underneath the sack of membranes as the caesarean incision was made, before the doctor broke the water."

“The thought came to me, 'My God, that's a person.' Then he broke the water. And when he broke the water, it was like I had a pain in my heart, just like when I saw the first suction abortion. And then he delivered the baby, and I couldn't touch it. I wasn't much of an assistant. I just stood there, and the reality of what was going on finally began to seep into my calloused brain and heart.

“They took that little baby that was making little sounds and moving and kicking, and set it on the table in a cold, stainless steel bowl. And every time I would look over while we were repairing the incision in the uterus and finishing the Caesarean, I would see that little person kicking and moving in that bowl.

“And it kicked and moved less and less, of course, as time went on. I can remember going over and looking at that baby when we were done with the surgery and the baby was still alive. You could see the chest was moving and the heart beating, and the baby would try to take a little breath like that, and it really hurt inside, and it began to educate me as to what abortion really was.”


Abortion is one of the cruelest and selfish acts imaginable.  The abortionists are trained to “sell” the abortions.  The women are not told of alternatives such as adoption.  They are not allowed to view the sonograms lest they see the human being on the inside of them and change their minds.  And, of course, they need cash up front for the service.  Many of the women who have abortions suffer physically and emotionally from it.  It is sad and amazing that such practices are allowed in our nation.  Some of these things have recently changed in individual states through the passing of certain abortion laws, however.   


The current political landscape

Currently, the national Democratic Party is almost exclusively a pro-abortion party.  Knowing the true history of the Democratic Party, this is not surprising.  In 1850, the Democratic controlled congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law, and in 1854 they passed the Kansas Nebraska Act.  Following these pro-slavery laws, in 1854 some anti-slavery Democrats along with anti-slavery members from other political parties formed a new political party to fight against slavery called the Republican Party.  In 1860, when Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected President and the Republicans also took over Congress, the Democratic congressman from the southern states left Congress and formed what they called the “Slaveholding” Confederate States of America.  The northern Democrats were still for slavery, but not succession.

The Republican Congress immediately began to pass civil rights laws including equal pay for those in the military.  They passed the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery in 1865 that was only supported by 23% of the northern Democrats.  Three years after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment, which declared that former slaves have the same rights as any other citizen of the States, passed without one Democratic vote, while 94% of the Republicans voted for it.  The 15th Amendment in 1869, which gave the right to vote to the former slaves was also passed without one Democratic vote in Congress.

Black Republicans flourished in the South and many were elected to state legislative positions, national congressional seats, as well as Governor of Louisiana.  The Republican Congress passed 23 civil rights bills up until the year of 1875, as several of them were passed by an overridden veto of a Democratic President.  Then in 1876, the Democrats again took over Congress. 

The Democrats were largely successful in taking back Congress because of the organization that Democrats started in 1866 called the Klu Klux Klan.  It was the Klan’s goal to break down the Republican Party and to pave the way for the Democrats to again control the Congress.  Once the Democrats took control of the Congress in 1876, many of the civil rights that were gained for the blacks were taken away or suppressed by the Democrats, and there was not another civil rights bill passed until 1964 – 89 years later.

Even with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, there was opposition by the Democrats.  Even though they had an overwhelming majority at the time (72% of the Congress), out of the 315 Democrats, only 198 (62%) voted for the bill.  83% of the Republicans voted for it, and it was also the Republican President Eisenhower who originally tried to pass civil rights legislation that was blocked by the Democrats.

Today, the national Democratic Party continues their rich history of their anti-American, anti-human rights, and anti-Christian agenda.  There is not a moral issue that the national Democratic Party falls on the right side of. 

In a 1998 Amendment to have voluntary prayer in public schools reinstated, 87% of the Democrats opposed it, while only 12% of Republicans opposed it.

In the ‘90s, even though Congress twice passed a partial-birth abortion ban, twice Democratic President Bill Clinton vetoed the bill, while 82% of Democrats in Congress also opposed the ban.  President Bush finally signed a partial-birth abortion ban into law in 2003.  However, the ban is now held up in the federal courts.  There were only 2 Senate Republicans who voted against it.  There were 31 Senate Democrats who voted against the ban (65%), and the only 3 who abstained from voting were Democrats.

In this heinous act of partial-birth abortion, labor is induced in a woman who is in the third-trimester of pregnancy.  The abortionist grabs the baby’s legs with forceps and pulls the whole body out except for the head.  An incision is made in the base of the skull, and its brain is then sucked out by a powerful vacuum.  The delivery of the dead baby is then completed.  Only 14 (29%) of Senate Democrats found it within themselves to vote to ban this inhumane and barbarous act.

On the constitutional amendment of 2004 to keep marriage only between one man and one woman, 88% of the Republicans voted for it, and only 6% of the Democrats did so.

In 1999, Congress introduced a bill (HR 1501) for the allowing of public religious displays such as the Ten Commandments.  80% of Americans support these displays.  91% of the Republicans voted for this bill, and only 21% of the Democrats.

In 2004, in a bill to keep “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, 98% of the Republicans voted for it, while only 7% of the Democrats did so.

The House of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act of 2003, which reverses the restrictions on church political speech that Democratic President Lyndon Johnson signed into law in 1954, failed because 76% of the Republicans and only 5% of the Democrats voted for it. 

These are just a few examples of how the national Democratic Party is consistently on the wrong side of the Christian and moral issues of the day.  Just as the great majority of Democrats were for slavery and stated so in their political platform in the mid 1800’s, so it is today that the great majority of Democrats support abortion and have in their political platform that they believe in the woman’s “right to choose.”


The Question

The question that is obvious is this – How can a “Christian” vote for someone who supports abortion? 

We know that over 80% of Americans consider themselves Christian.  If those who call themselves Christian would just be a moral and decent people and vote for the moral and decent issues and candidates, then this nation would be totally turned around morally, the national Democratic Party would be changed overnight or destroyed, no politician of any party running for office would again dare to say that they are pro-choice and they would stand on the right side of the moral issues, and abortion would be outlawed.


Their conscience seared with a hot iron

Do you remember what the former abortionist, Dr. Brewer, said about attending his first few abortions?

“It hurt me again like a hot poker. But after a while, it got to where it didn't hurt.”

Paul speaks of those in the last days “having their conscience seared with a hot iron.” (1Timothy 4:2)  Even though he says, “the Spirit speaketh expressly” that these things will happen in the “latter times” or last days, we believe the last days began after the Apostle’s departure.  We see throughout New Testament history this searing of conscience.  We saw it in the Roman Catholic Church, who for centuries murdered those who disagreed with their doctrines and who did not submit to the Pope of Rome.  They thought they were doing the service of God.  They called the people they murdered “heretics.”  By calling them heretics they made them sound evil and somewhat dehumanized them, which made it easier for their conscience to accept killing.

We saw it with Adolph Hitler.  Hitler created an atmosphere in Germany where even the Churches did not object to his madness.  Hitler and his minions had their conscience seared into believing that the Jews and the disabled were less than human and should be exterminated.  Much of the Church and world was silent on this until it was almost too late.

We saw it in American history with slavery.  Slaves were considered by many to be less than human and were treated as property.  Dehumanizing them set the stage for mistreatment and murder.  God sent Abraham Lincoln and others to fight against this horror, but after a few years, evil took over again.  Organizations such as the Klu Klux Klan, which actually claims a form of Christianity, persecuted and murdered blacks, and the Democratic Party passed all kinds of laws that suppressed the black vote in the South.  Those who had their consciences seared considered lynching to be a good tool in suppressing the Republican vote.  From 1882 to 1964, there were 4,743 lynchings – 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites. 

We see it today in America with abortion.  They have succeeded in that many view an unborn baby as less than human, or not a “person” until birth.  They call it a fetus.  Some say it is just a mass of tissue that can be discarded by the woman’s “choice.”  Those who perform abortions have their conscience seared with a hot iron.  They can dismember a baby and believe they are doing a service to humanity and a service to women, even though over half of those aborted are female!  A pregnant woman used to be highly respected in our society and lovingly referred to as “with child.”  Today, in many cases, this life from God has been reduced and degraded to a “choice.”  Those “Christians” in America who support abortion and who knowingly vote for those politicians who support abortion also have their conscience seared with a hot iron.  They substitute morality for murder and political expediency. 


The answer  

The answer is that there needs to be another Great Awakening in America.  If Americans were just awakened to the moral issues of the day, we would see abortion once again outlawed. 

There seems to be a trend towards morality in our nation.  In the recent 2004 elections, the 11 states that had it on their ballot overwhelmingly voted in favor of keeping marriage between one man and one woman.  In recent polls, 61% of Americans now believe that abortion should be ended or greatly restricted, and 72% of teenagers believe abortion is morally wrong.

Let us pray that this trend continues.  Let us also educate ourselves, work towards ending abortion, and refuse to vote for anyone of any party that supports abortion.  If a politician is “pro-choice,” there is something inherently wrong with him, and he should not be supported.  Since Roe v. Wade, every Democratic candidate for President has been pro-choice.  Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Richard Gephardt, and Al Gore were all once pro-life, but when they pursued their Presidential aspirations, they changed to pro-choice.  The national Democratic Party is sold out to the supporting of abortion.  Unless they change, they will not have a candidate for President that is pro-life.  It is time that we wake up and realize what is going on.  It is time that the pulpits of America no longer remain silent on the moral issues and on abortion, as many now are starting to speak out.  A Christian should not vote for anyone of any party who supports abortion.

Some say that abortion is just one issue and call those who refuse to vote for those who support abortion “one issue voters.”  Abortion is not just an issue.  It is life and death.  A politician who supports abortion is morally bankrupt, or just plain ignorant to the scope of the issue.  They support the murdering of unborn babies for the sake of the woman’s “right to choose,” and/or for the sake of political expediency.  They are ignoring the “right to life” clause in the Declaration of Independence.  They are ignoring the Declaration principles that have made our nation great.  They support legalized murder that is bringing the judgment of God upon this once Christian nation.

Benjamin Franklin said:

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.  As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”

This quote is typical among our Founders.  They knew that our freedom could not survive unless we remained a moral and virtuous people.

I cannot think of anything more “corrupt and vicious” than the taking of innocent life in the once sacred place of the mother’s womb.  It is time that our nation rids itself of this terrible sin and scourge, and return to its moral and Christian heritage, so that “righteousness” will once again “exalt” our nation.
